Ian S. Markham

Christian ethicist and theologian; Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary and President of The General Theological Seminary.

Ian Markham took his B.D. at the University of London, an M.Litt. in philosophy and ethics at the University of Cambridge, and a Ph.D. in Christian ethics at the University of Exeter, where he then taught for seven years. In 1996 he was appointed Liverpool Professor of Theology and Public Life at Liverpool Hope University, and became its Foundation Dean in 1998.

He moved to the United States in 2001 as Dean of Hartford Seminary and Professor of Theology and Ethics, and in 2007 became Dean and President of Virginia Theological Seminary. Since November 2022 he has also served as President of The General Theological Seminary in New York. He was ordained deacon and then priest in the Episcopal Church in 2007, and has been Priest Associate at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Alexandria, ever since.

He has been a Fellow of King’s College, London, and delivered its F. D. Maurice Lectures in 2015; he gave the Paddock Lectures in 2021 and the Teape Lectures in India in 2004. He was Robinson Fellow at the University of Glasgow, Claggett Fellow at Washington National Cathedral, and Frank Woods Fellow at Trinity College, Melbourne. He chairs the Washington Theological Consortium and serves on the board of St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School in Alexandria.

He is married to Lesley Markham; they have one grown son, Luke.
